How to brush your teeth – Tips / Steps / Suggestions

Brushing your teeth is an important part of your dental health and care. Brushing your teeth is not just for a white smile and fresher breath, it’s very important for your overall health. When you brush, you remove your mouth plaque — a thin film of bacteria that sticks to your teeth and will create cavities, gum disease(Gingivitis and Periodontal Disease), and if you ignore it long enough, will cause your teeth to fall out!

Use a good quality toothbrush

Use a soft-bristled brush that effectively remove plaque and debris from your teeth, without irritating the gums or eroding tooth enamel like hard-bristled brushes can do when used with sideways action. The size and shape of your brush should fit your mouth allowing you to reach all areas easily.

Brush your teeth twice a day

Brush your teeth twice a day for 2-3 minutes in the morning and before going to sleep at night. This will maintain your overall oral health as well as prevent from other health complications.

Why to brush twice a day

As the bacterial accumulation in 12 hours is soft plaque if not cleaned then it gets solidified by hard calculus leading to gum diseases and pyorrhea, hence brushing once a day is not enough.

Replace your toothbrush

Replace toothbrush every three or four months, or sooner if the bristles are frayed. A worn toothbrush won’t do a good job of cleaning your teeth.

Use clinically approved fluoride toothpaste

It will remove plaque from the teeths, also it helps strengthen your teeths. It's also important to note down that these fluoride type toothpaste is not good to be swallowed, as ingesting it too much can have serious health consequences. It should not be used for children under the age of three.

Steps involved in brushing your teeths

  • Put a small amount of toothpaste onto your brush.
  • Start at the back of your mouth with your toothbrush at the gum line on a 45 degree angle so that the brush is placed partly on your gums and begin gently brushing in short horizontal strokes.
  • Be careful not to scrub so hard and scrub gently.
  • Spend at least three minutes brushing your teeth.
  • Brush the underside of your teeth that is usually skipped.
  • Gently scrub your tongue also to remove any bacteria that can cause bad breath.
  • Rinse your mouth out with water after brushing.
  • Do visit your dentist every 6 months for oral screening that also maintains your overall health as well.
